Minister for Finance Dr. Baburam Bhattarai on Tuesday said he is trying hard to provide free education up to class 12. Prime Minister and Unified CPN (Maoist) Pushpa Kamal Dahal and CPN-UML chairman Jhala Nath Khanal have agreed to address the demands of agitating Tharus and other janajati groups. They reached the understanding at a meeting Friday.

The understanding between top leaders of the two main ruling allies came as the protest movement of Tharus and janajati groups entered its 12th day.

Highways, educational institutions and businesses in several Terai districts have been closed due to the protests that erupted after the government enlisted Tharus and Terai-based janajatis under Madhesi category.

The EU Heads of Mission, which includes Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Britain and the European Commission, and the representative of the Netherlands in Kathmandu issued a joint statement saying the recent recruitment campaigns by the Nepal Army and the Maoist People’s Liberation Army (PLA) violated the spirit of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement signed three years ago between the rebels and the seven major parties. The group said that the recruitment campaigns also posed “a serious threat to the peaceful democratic future which the Nepali people have fought so hard for”. - The Hindu News Update Service

Normal life in various Tarai districts was thrown out of gear on Monday, the eight day in a row, due to the strike called by the Tharu indigenous groups.
